smallest c code sample for an operating system?

I want to make a small operating system as a hobby. I find I always get stuck learning a language or concept until i get a good “Hello World” program working. My biggest problem is i’m not understanding protected mode very well. I need an example that loads into protected mode then puts something(anything) on the screen so i can work from there. Just point me in the right direction please.

P.S. I am quite aware of how hard making an operating system will be, I know that there will never be a market for it,and I know it wont be very good. Please don’t try to deter me.

My friend was in US, he married to an Indian girl from Chandigarh City, they are Mehta’s, when he took her to US, he came to know that she got married to him because she wanted to settle down in US as her sister’s also did marry to a US citizen (Khanna), who settled in Parsippany, NJ. Since he got job transffered, she denied coming with him and she with her sister/sister’s husband threated him, they will file false DV assault case if he tries to leave US. and he had no other option left but leave without informing them by leaving all the household and hard earnt stuff as it is like car etc., since he provided a month rent/medical insurance and grocery everything which needs to survive with cash money and some money in her account. and she came in India after a month and filed a false dowry case against him, she harassed him enough (its more then two years) and now its came to knowledge that she filed a DV assault complaint in US by showing some bruises on her arms & legs with the help of her sister/sister’s husband and also applied for U-Visa based on the false/frivolous ground and concocted story. since their daughter is US citizen by birth, she is using her also as a ladder to settle herself in US as her life long dream, she has left daughter in India and trying to get benefits by making concocted story and shown bruised made by herself.
And since the boy is fighting the harassment and other cases in India, hence cannot goto US to contest the DV assault case.
My friend need help and suggestions as he doesn’t have anybody in US. what should he do?

Desire and the hope to be free.?

I’ve been living a tedious, monotonous, repetitive life for many years. Not much has changed and the things that do somehow re-spawn themselves in a new form. I have much to say, and I hope I can keep it as brief as possible. All I’m asking for is help and a solution, not someone’s judgment, imposed beliefs, or offensive words. I hope I can be as unambiguous and unbiased as I can, as to not create confusion or feelings of animosity…so now I will begin.
About me:
To begin I will describe myself so that what follows can be better understood. I am currently attending public school, I am a straight “A” honor roll student, who has been disillusioned by the “system”. When I say system I mean, the default path a person takes from their birth to death, i.e. Primary School, Secondary School, Employment, Retirement, then inevitably their death. Within these transitional phases of life nowhere is it said to stop and enjoy life…and I have my own personal refutation regarding how virtually impossible this is, in modern society. I am very talented, and I maintain a transcendentalist-like temperament. I have a thirst for knowledge that cannot be quenched attending traditional high school. I wasn’t always the model student that I am now viewed as. But with this change in mentality came the realization of my potential, and the hindrances that oppose the acquisition of this potential. To elaborate I will describe my experience with the American school system. Although what I’m writing may seem a bit tentative, I assure you it will connect in the end.
School System:
As many know, high school students’ lives revolve around a cumulative GPA (grade point average) which dictates the rest of a person’s life (sadly). How high or low it is, is a good indication of where you will be heading later in life (although not absolute). I’m sure many will see the pressure it puts on students (who actually care). I’m subjected to this silent beast who threatens the future of my life if I don’t adhere to the rules set forth by it. So one can imagine the stress it places upon a human. Other factors of stress include college preparation, community service, extracurricular activities, scholarship applications, college applications, financial aid applications, SAT/ACT testing…all while trying to juggle 6-8 classes, maintain a GPA that is acceptable to colleges while finding time to relax and “smell the roses”. This is nearly impossible, and creates drones that don’t really learn, “but get by to get out”. There are many other things which I love to talk about regarding the school system, however, for the sake of time and space I’ll stop here.
Religions (or ideas):
Religion is a very “touchy” subject for most people but I must acknowledge every idea, which presents itself before me. Whether you are Christian, Atheist, Buddhist, or Muslim, these words are not meant to offend but to “expose” ideas that provide no basis through which it can be claimed “The correct religion (or idea)”. There are myriad religions in the world, which claim they are the right and true path. Obviously this assertion is filled with fallacious conjecture. Since there is no way to discern the “right” religion from a false one, religious intolerance should cease. People should practice their religions freely without fear of being ostracized, without evangelizing or imposing their beliefs on people, or stating a person will face this afterlife because of what one holy book says, and atheists also should not challenge a religious person’s belief because that belief is dear and a part of them. It’s safe to say that regardless of what religion one practices a central guiding principle in all is….love.
Human Nature:
In my years of solitude, engulfed in my thoughts, it has allowed me to remove the blinds from my eyes and to see reality as reality truly is. I could have taken a very destructive route in life, but I knew that I had potential to be great. In those years of solitude, I was lonely, without love and affection. I began to develop a misanthropic mindset that all humans were disgusting creatures, and that evil was part of human nature, but I knew this was simply because I had not met a person who could show me the good within life. Although it is true to some extent that there are horrible people, on the opposite end of the spectrum there are delightful people as well. So my question is, with all that has been said:
Can someone show me the path to a better, loving, and happy life? To take me under their wing, teach me, and to free me from this repetitive cycle and system which I fear may be the end of me.

Laying sod (grass) in a yard where weed activity is extremely fertile (help on preparations)?

I live in Sacramento. My backyard has weeds that grow at extremely fast rates (in 2 months, a completely flattened area can be knee high with weeds.

I want to turn my backyard jungle into a respectable lawn. I know that I have to free up the soil so that when I lay down my sod, it will grow better. How do I prepare the soil to prevent weeds from growing back quickly but at the same time, allowing my new sod to grow freely?

Also, are there any techniques you can give me on:

1. drainage;
2. attaching a sprinkling system
3. types of sods that provide nice looking green grass that is durable (with sprinkling) in very hot summers.

What will it take to open an impatient Detox center in New Jersey?

A long time resident of New Jersey as well as having lived in Southern Florida, I’ve witnessed a good percentage of my friends and peers ruin their lives with opiate addictions. This is an intense problem in NJ at the moment and based on talking with my peers, the local detox centers are packed and patients are being sent to places like Florida. I am a recent college graduate and am inspired to help with this issue! I am not interested in opening a full on residential sober house/rehab center, but a detox center for addicts to receive their initial detox to contain withdrawal symptoms. For example, those who need a 7 day stay for buprenorphine treatment to come off opiates. Patients will then either leave at their own will or can admit themselves to rehabilitation centers. A good example is Sunrise Detox located in New Jersey and Florida. I’d like to create a business plan to submit for financing but need consultation concerning federal/state funding, medicaid/medicare, block grants, employee licensing, regulations, etc. If anyone knows of a good consulting company, that’d help too. Why is the United States and Canada extremely slow with creating new rail lines?

Okay, being a Korean myself who lives in New Jersey, I noticed that rail projects in the developed countries of North America is extremely slow and is often cancelled. I also noticed that Americans were obsessed with their cars to the point that they drive, thinking that driving is convenient, when they should realize that they are at a greater risk of being injured or killed in a car crash on top of a greater potential of a messier driving record due to an unintentional traffic violation.

There are still plenty of people who drive in other developed countries like some European countries, Japan, China and South Korea. Let’s take South Korea as an example. The rail projects are making a lot more progress in South Korea (from a slow train in the 1960′s to a high speed KTX since 2004). In addition, the number of subway lines in Seoul is increasing significantly in a relatively short period of time. United States, however, doesn’t make much progress. The ARC tunnel project (a new tunnel proposal between New Jersey and New York City) has been cancelled by Gov. Chris Christie due to cost overruns and the California High Speed Rail is risking cancellations. In the long run, these trains will actually help the economy. I am hearing things like the project is due for completion in far future dates like 2030, 2040 and even 2050; Being a college student now studying engineering, I will be a middle age adult by then, possibly with grandchildren! Even though I do see some progress in some rail projects like the East Side Access, which will allow Long Island Rail Road trains to go to Grand Central Terminal, had a completion date of 2016 but has been pushed to 2018. It makes me sick that people just are attached to their cars in the United States and the rail projects are either slow or cancelled, while the rail and subway projects are more successful in other developed countries. Even though I am a driver, there are times where I get to certain destinations by train (or bus).

Why do people not use trains for transportation in the US? This is my question. I don’t mind planes at all, since I am an aviation enthusiast. Though the airports are getting extremely congested these days while airfares are getting expensive with fees added. And being driver myself, gas prices and traffic congestion is starting to become a hassle. Where are you from, Genghis? The countryside? I do enjoy taking a nice scenic drive through the mountains and even the countryside but I live in the suburbs of NYC and driving is starting to be annoying.

This is a sad story about a girl from my area that I never got to know in real life since she got killed in a car accident on the way back to her NJ home from Montreal area. She was not even in high school. I would have known her in high school if she was still alive. If there was a high-speed train and people didn’t rely too much on their cars then the risk of this preventable tragedy would have gone down, regardless of their transportation mode.

Why won’t any programs on my computer open ??

OK so I just got back home to Florida after being in New Jersey for the past few months and my computer is acting really strange. It seems that nothing I click on will open. Every time I click on an icon the little hourglass will pop up as if the program were loading and about to open- but then the hourglass just goes away and nothing opens.

This happens with almost everything! The only thing that opens is Mozilla Firefox and iTunes. I tried to go to control panel, and that did open up, but nothing inside will! I wanted to create a new user account on my computer to see if it happens on that account too, but it won’t let me open up the user account thing.

So I tried going to System Tools on the start up menu so maybe I could try to do a System Restore.. but, you guessed it- the system restore icon won’t open! The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama’s detractors have been seeking.

The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama’s legitimacy and qualification to serve as president.
